School Based SAT Cancelled by Maine DOE for April 13, 2021

We have just learned that the State of Maine Dept. of Education has cancelled the SAT portion of this year’s Maine High School assessment, typically known as the “April School-Day SAT”. This will impact 11th graders planning to take the SAT this spring in a few significant ways. The April SAT is commonly the first SAT students take (as juniors) - and many families have come accustomed to this first test date being set by the state, administered during a school day, and with no registration or fee required.

Due to the cancellation of this test, it will now be entirely up to families to schedule, register and pay for an SAT on their own. Some schools have already decided to hold their own “school day SAT” on a date chosen by the school. Other school districts have decided to forgo a “school-day SAT” altogether.  Since each school will handle this differently, please reach out to your school officials for their specific plans and registration procedures.

Your student may also register for a national SAT date at a participating school/test center through the College Board. The schedule for this spring currently has tests scheduled for 3/13, 5/8, and 6/5. All three are currently open for registration. Click here for more details and to register through the College Board website. There are many considerations in choosing the best test date for your student, but we generally recommend taking the test as close to the completion of our SAT prep class as possible.  Keep in mind, many students take the exam more than once before applying to colleges.  If you are having trouble deciding which test dates are best for your student, please reach out and we can talk through your options.

We also want to confirm for you that we are committed to our current class dates on Sunday afternoons. We believe this schedule will best accommodate the variety of decisions families may make about test dates - whether they be “school-day” SATs in March or April, or the national dates in March, May or June.

Despite these changes, we certainly look forward to getting started with our students next month and helping them prepare for success on the SAT. There are still a few spots left in the class, so it’s not too late to sign up!

Have a great week!

Thanks,

Geoff and Brandon
